Description
Overview of the medicine
Miclo-005 Ointment is a topical medication combining an antifungal (Miconazole Nitrate) and a mild corticosteroid (Hydrocortisone). It is used to treat skin infections caused by fungi that are accompanied by inflammation and itching.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area 2-3 times daily, or as directed by a physician. Continue treatment for a few days after symptoms resolve.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required. Use with caution as skin may be thinner.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required for topical application.
How to Take
For topical use only. Clean and dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin film of ointment to cover the entire affected skin area and gently rub in.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole Nitrate inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to increased permeability and cell death. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and redness by suppressing the immune response.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief (itching, inflammation) may occur within a few days; complete fungal eradication may take longer.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed components are excreted via urine and feces, but quantities are negligible with topical use.
Half life
Not clinically relevant for topical administration due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Systemic absorption is minimal following topical application to intact skin. Higher absorption may occur with damaged skin or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Any systemically absorbed Miconazole is metabolized in the liver; Hydrocortisone is also metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Miconazole, Hydrocortisone, or any excipients.
- Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella).
- Tuberculous skin lesions.
- Acne vulgaris, rosacea, perioral dermatitis.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Although systemic absorption is minimal, high doses or prolonged use of Miconazole could theoretically potentiate anticoagulant effects.
Other topical corticosteroids
Concurrent use may increase systemic absorption and potential for adverse effects.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to produce acute systemic effects. Excessive and prolonged use may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects, such as adrenal suppression. Management includes symptomatic and supportive measures.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Avoid prolonged use or application to large areas.
