Description
Overview of the medicine
Milk of Magnesia Plus 300 mg Emulsion is a combination medication used to relieve indigestion, heartburn, sour stomach, constipation, and gas. It contains Magnesium Hydroxide, which acts as an antacid and saline laxative, and Simethicone, an antiflatulent that helps to break up gas bubbles.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 mL orally, 3-4 times daily after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician. Shake well before use.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with prolonged use due to potential for electrolyte imbalance or renal impairment. Consult a doctor.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage or avoid in severe renal impairment due to risk of hypermagnesemia.
How to Take
Administer orally. Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with water.
Mechanism of Action
Magnesium Hydroxide neutralizes stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid to form water and magnesium chloride. It also draws water into the intestines, causing osmotic pressure that stimulates bowel movements (laxative effect). Simethicone works by altering the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce and be more easily expelled.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antacid: Minutes; Laxative: 30 minutes to 6 hours; Simethicone: Rapid.
Excretion
Magnesium: Primarily renally excreted for absorbed portion, unabsorbed portion excreted in feces. Simethicone: Excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Magnesium: Varies, excreted by kidneys. Simethicone: Not applicable (unabsorbed).
Absorption
Magnesium Hydroxide: Magnesium ions are minimally absorbed from the GI tract (approximately 15-30%), while hydroxide is not absorbed. Simethicone: Not absorbed from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Magnesium: Not metabolized, physiological ion. Simethicone: Not metabolized.
