Description
Overview of the medicine
Mizol HC Cream is a topical preparation containing an antifungal agent (Miconazole Nitrate) and a corticosteroid (Hydrocortisone). It is used to treat various fungal skin infections, especially those accompanied by inflammation, itching, or redness. Miconazole treats the fungal infection, while Hydrocortisone reduces inflammation and associated symptoms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area twice daily, preferably morning and evening. Continue treatment for up to 2-4 weeks or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for topical application.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin layer and gently rub it into the skin. Wash hands immediately after use unless hands are the treated area.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole nitrate inhibits fungal ergosterol synthesis, disrupting fungal cell membrane integrity and inhibiting fungal growth. Hydrocortisone, a corticosteroid, exerts anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive actions. It reduces inflammation by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and suppressing immune responses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms typically within a few days.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed Miconazole and Hydrocortisone metabolites are primarily excreted via urine and feces.
Half life
Not clinically relevant for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may be increased with inflammation or damage to the skin.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed Miconazole is metabolized in the liver. Hydrocortisone is metabolized locally in the skin and systemically in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Miconazole, Hydrocortisone, or any excipients.
- Viral skin infections (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella).
- Tuberculosis of the skin.
- Perioral dermatitis and rosacea.
- Untreated bacterial skin infections.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Systemic absorption of Miconazole may potentiate anticoagulant effects of warfarin, requiring monitoring of INR.
Other topical corticosteroids
Concomitant use with other potent corticosteroids on large areas or for prolonged periods should be avoided.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep away from direct sunlight.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects. Excessive use or prolonged application on large areas may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects. Discontinue use and consult a physician.
Pregnancy & Lactation
