Description
Overview of the medicine
Momespray 50 mcg Nasal Spray contains Mometasone Furoate, a synthetic corticosteroid used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, and for the treatment of nasal polyps.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Allergic Rhinitis: Two sprays (50 mcg each) into each nostril once daily. Nasal Polyps: Two sprays (50 mcg each) into each nostril twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required due to very low systemic absorption.
How to Take
For nasal use only. Shake the bottle well before each use. Prime the pump before the first use or if the spray has not been used for more than one week. Gently blow your nose to clear the nostrils before administration.
Mechanism of Action
Mometasone Furoate is a potent glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces the release of inflammatory mediators (e.g., histamines, leukotrienes) and inhibits the migration of inflammatory cells, thereby decreasing inflammation and allergic symptoms in the nasal passages.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often seen within 1-2 days, full effect may take 1-2 weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the feces and, to a lesser extent, in the urine.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 5.8 hours (for absorbed portion).
Absorption
Very low systemic absorption from nasal administration (less than 0.1% bioavailable).
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Mometasone Furoate or any component of the spray.
- Untreated localized infection involving the nasal mucosa.
- Recent nasal surgery or trauma, until healing has occurred.
Drug Interactions
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., Ketoconazole)
Co-administration with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase systemic exposure to mometasone furoate, though this is usually not clinically significant due to low nasal absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely with nasal administration due to very low systemic absorption. Chronic excessive use may lead to signs and symptoms of hypercorticism. Treatment should be supportive, with gradual tapering of the drug if chronic high doses were used.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if Mometasone Furoate is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
