How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to create a pouch, and instill the drop. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface. Replace cap after use.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement may be observed within a few days.
Excretion
Systemic excretion is renal and fecal, but minimal for topical ophthalmic use.
Half life
Approximately 13 hours in plasma after oral dose, but significantly less for topical ocular due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. Localized absorption within ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Systemic metabolism is hepatic, but minimal for topical ophthalmic use.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Hypersensitivity to any excipients in the formulation
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce systemic absorption of oral Moxifloxacin; not relevant for topical ophthalmic.
Other Ophthalmic Drugs
If using multiple ophthalmic medications, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Rinse the eye with lukewarm water if excessive drops are applied.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category C for pregnancy. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution advised during lactation as it is unknown if it is excreted in human milk after ocular administration.
