Description
Overview of the medicine
Mucogel is an antacid and antiflatulent oral suspension used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, and gas. It contains Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide to neutralize stomach acid, and Simethicone to break down gas bubbles.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 ml (2-4 teaspoonfuls) 3-4 times daily, between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution in patients with impaired renal function due to potential for magnesium accumulation.
Renal_impairment
Should be used with caution or avoided in severe renal impairment due to the risk of hypermagnesemia and aluminum accumulation.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Take orally, usually between meals and at bedtime. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminum and Magnesium Hydroxides act locally to neutralize gastric acid, forming water and salts. Simethicone is a defoaming agent that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce and be more easily expelled.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-15 minutes (antacid effect)
Excretion
Unabsorbed Aluminum and Magnesium are excreted in feces. Absorbed Magnesium is excreted renally. Simethicone is excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable for local acting agents with minimal absorption.
Absorption
Aluminum Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are minimally absorbed systemically (less than 1-5%). Simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not applicable for Aluminum Hydroxide and Simethicone; small absorbed amount of Magnesium is renally cleared.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- •Severe renal impairment (risk of hypermagnesemia)
- •Hypophosphatemia (with prolonged use of aluminum hydroxide)
Drug Interactions
Iron salts
Reduced iron absorption. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Ketoconazole, Itraconazole
Reduced absorption due to increased gastric pH. Take these drugs at least 2 hours before the antacid.
Digoxin, Phenytoin, Thyroxine
Reduced absorption of these drugs. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Reduced absorption due to chelation with aluminum and magnesium. Administer at least 2-4 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light. Keep away from freezing.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. In patients with renal impairment, magnesium toxicity (hypotension, bradycardia, respiratory depression) or aluminum toxicity may occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when taken as directed, but it is advisable to consult a doctor before use.
