Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount to the affected area three times daily for 5 to 10 days.

No specific dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment

How to Take
For topical use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment, unless hands are the treated area. The treated area may be covered with gauze if desired.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme essential for the synthesis of bacterial proteins.

Clinical improvement usually seen within 3-5 days.
Excretion
Excreted renally as monic acid.
Half life
Systemically absorbed mupirocin is rapidly metabolized and excreted, with a half-life of 20-40 minutes.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed through intact skin. Absorption increases with denuded skin or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed mupirocin is rapidly metabolized to inactive monic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or polyethylene glycol
- Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use (unless specifically nasal formulation)
Drug Interactions
No significant interactions
No significant systemic drug-drug interactions are expected due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store below 25-30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical application is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. Ingestion of the ointment may lead to gastrointestinal upset. Symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether mupirocin is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
