Description
Overview of the medicine
Mupirocin 2% w/w Ointment is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo and other skin lesions caused by susceptible bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount of the ointment to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily for 5 to 10 days. Cover the treated area with gauze if desired.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is generally required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thus preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically, improvement is seen within 3-5 days of treatment.
Excretion
The inactive metabolite is primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Plasma half-life of systemically absorbed mupirocin is 20-40 minutes.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of mupirocin through intact skin is minimal. Increased absorption may occur through abraded skin.
Metabolism
Any systemically absorbed mupirocin is rapidly metabolized to an inactive metabolite (monic acid) in the skin and liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any of the excipients of the ointment.
- Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use (unless specified as nasal ointment).
Drug Interactions
Chloramphenicol
Mupirocin should not be co-administered with other topical products as this may result in dilution of the Mupirocin and a potential reduction in activity. Specifically, chloramphenicol may antagonize the action of mupirocin.
Storage
Store below 25°C to 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. In case of accidental ingestion, provide symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Mupirocin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution should be exercised when mupirocin is administered to a nursing mother, as it is not known whether mupirocin is excreted in human milk.
