Description
Overview of the medicine
Mycofast-2-Cream is a topical antifungal medication containing miconazole nitrate, primarily used to treat various skin fungal infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and candidiasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin and surrounding area twice daily, usually for 2-4 weeks or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustments required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly before application. Apply a thin layer and rub gently until it disappears. Wash hands after use.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole nitrate works by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption leads to increased cell membrane permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately, fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often seen within a few days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in feces, with a smaller amount in urine, if systemically absorbed.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption; estimated plasma half-life of systemically absorbed miconazole is about 24 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 1%) occurs after topical application to intact skin. Absorption is slightly higher on damaged or inflamed skin.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily in the liver if systemically absorbed, but systemic metabolism is negligible with topical use.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to miconazole nitrate or any other component of the cream
- •Not for ophthalmic or oral use
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding, especially with extensive topical application or damaged skin. Monitor INR.
Phenytoin
Potential for increased phenytoin levels if significant systemic absorption occurs (rare).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Limited data; use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Consult a doctor. Lactation: Unknown if excreted in breast milk; use with caution, consult a doctor.
