Description
Overview of the medicine
Mystocal 500 mg tablet is a calcium supplement used to prevent and treat calcium deficiencies. It is essential for strong bones, teeth, and overall body functions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 1000 mg elemental calcium daily, usually divided into 1-2 doses, preferably with meals. Doses may vary based on deficiency and medical advice.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor for hypercalcemia due to potential reduced renal function. Dosage may need adjustment based on serum calcium levels.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required based on calcium and phosphate levels. Avoid in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food, but taking with meals may enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Provides exogenous calcium, essential for bone formation, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, blood coagulation, and hormonal secretion. It helps maintain normal serum calcium levels.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours for blood level changes, weeks to months for significant bone health benefits.
Excretion
Primarily via kidneys (urine), also through feces and sweat. Fecal excretion accounts for a significant portion.
Half life
Variable, depending on calcium metabolism and bone turnover rates, typically ranges from hours to days.
Absorption
Absorbed primarily in the small intestine, absorption rate varies with dose, gastric acidity, and presence of Vitamin D. Bioavailability is typically 20-30%.
Metabolism
Calcium is an ion and is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it is utilized in physiological processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (abnormally high calcium levels in blood)
- •Hypercalciuria (abnormally high calcium levels in urine)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Kidney stones (history of or current)
- •Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce their absorption. Take calcium at a different time, typically at least 30-60 minutes after bisphosphonates.
Corticosteroids
Can decrease calcium absorption.
Iron supplements
Calcium may interfere with iron absorption. Take at different times.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase serum calcium levels by reducing urinary excretion. Monitor calcium levels closely.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Calcium can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium.
Thyroid hormones (Levothyroxine)
Calcium can reduce the absorption of levothyroxine. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, thirst, polyuria, muscle weakness, confusion, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Severe cases can lead to hypercalcemic crisis, cardiac arrhythmias, and renal failure. Treatment involves immediate discontinuation of calcium, hydration, loop diuretics, and sometimes corticosteroids or bisphosphonates.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and essential during pregnancy and lactation, but use under medical supervision to ensure appropriate dosage. The recommended daily intake of calcium for pregnant and lactating women should not be exceeded.
