Description
Overview of the medicine
Nacrom 2% Eye Drop contains Sodium Cromoglicate, a mast cell stabilizer used to prevent and treat various allergic eye conditions like allergic conjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, and vernal conjunctivitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops into each eye 4-6 times daily at regular intervals. Treatment should be continued for as long as exposure to the allergen persists, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients. Use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal and excretion is primarily unchanged.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pouch. Place the prescribed number of drops into the pouch and gently close the eye. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface (eye, finger, etc.) to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium Cromoglicate works by stabilizing mast cell membranes, thereby inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins, which are responsible for allergic reactions in the eyes. This preventative action helps to reduce symptoms like itching, redness, and swelling.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief may take several days (typically 2-7 days) to become apparent, and maximum effect may take up to 2 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged primarily via the kidneys and bile if absorbed systemically. Most of the topically applied drug remains unabsorbed.
Half life
Short, rapid elimination from the eye. Plasma half-life is approximately 80 minutes if absorbed systemically.
Absorption
Systemic absorption from the eye is minimal (<0.03%), resulting in very low plasma concentrations.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the body; it is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sodium cromoglicate or any other component of the formulation.
- Patients should remove soft contact lenses before applying the eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them, as preservatives may be absorbed by soft lenses.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If using other eye drops or ointments, allow at least 5 minutes between applications to ensure proper absorption and to avoid wash-out.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from direct light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with ophthalmic administration due to the minimal systemic absorption of sodium cromoglicate. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical advice, though serious systemic effects are not expected.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Human data is limited but suggests low risk due to minimal systemic absorption. Use during pregnancy and lactation is generally considered safe, but should be used only if clearly needed and advised by a doctor.

Clinical Trials
Numerous placebo-controlled clinical trials and real-world studies have consistently demonstrated the efficacy and safety of sodium cromoglicate ophthalmic solutions for the prevention and treatment of various allergic conjunctivitis forms.
Lab Monitoring
- No specific lab monitoring is routinely required for patients using ophthalmic sodium cromoglicate.
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients on the prophylactic nature of the drug and that symptom relief may not be immediate.
- Stress the importance of consistent use, especially during periods of known allergen exposure.
- Advise patients on proper eye drop instillation technique and contact lens precautions.
- Monitor for compliance and potential worsening of symptoms if not used correctly.
Patient Guidelines
- Use the eye drops regularly as prescribed for best results, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not stop treatment suddenly without consulting your doctor, especially during allergen exposure.
- Always wash your hands before and after applying eye drops.
- Avoid sharing eye drops with others to prevent cross-contamination.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances may occur immediately after application. If affected, do not drive or operate machinery until your vision clears.
Lifestyle Advice
- Identify and avoid known allergens (e.g., pollen, dust mites, pet dander) that trigger your allergic conjunctivitis.
- Keep windows closed during high pollen seasons and use air conditioning.
- Maintain good eye hygiene and avoid rubbing eyes excessively, as this can worsen irritation.
