Description
Overview of the medicine
Zinc is an essential trace element vital for numerous bodily functions including immune response, wound healing, cell growth, and DNA synthesis. Nalzin 10 mg tablet is used to treat and prevent zinc deficiency and as an adjunctive therapy for acute diarrhea, especially in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For zinc deficiency: 10-20 mg once daily, or as directed by physician. For therapeutic use, doses up to 50 mg/day may be used.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; no specific adjustment usually required. Caution if renal impairment is present.
Children
For acute diarrhea: Infants <6 months, 10 mg daily for 10-14 days. Children >6 months, 20 mg daily for 10-14 days. For zinc deficiency: 10 mg daily or as directed by a pediatrician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment. Dosage adjustment may be necessary due to potential accumulation.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Taking with food may reduce gastric upset. Avoid taking with dairy products or high-calcium foods as they can interfere with absorption. Separate from other medications by at least 2 hours.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc acts as a cofactor for over 300 enzymes involved in metabolism, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, cell division, and immune function. In diarrhea, it helps regenerate intestinal mucosa, reduces fluid loss, and improves absorption, thereby shortening the duration and severity of the episode.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects for deficiency are gradual, observed over days to weeks. For acute diarrhea, effects can be seen within hours to days.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via feces (bile), with smaller amounts excreted in urine and sweat.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 2-3 hours; however, whole-body turnover is much longer due to storage in various tissues.
Absorption
Variable, primarily absorbed in the small intestine. Absorption can be affected by food, phytates, and other minerals.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the conventional sense; it is incorporated into various proteins and enzymes throughout the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to zinc sulfate or any component of the formulation.
- Severe copper deficiency (as zinc can exacerbate it).
Drug Interactions
Penicillamine
Zinc can decrease the absorption and effectiveness of penicillamine. Separate administration times.
Iron supplements
High doses of iron can inhibit zinc absorption. Separate administration by several hours.
Copper supplements
High doses of zinc can interfere with copper absorption, potentially leading to copper deficiency.
Tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., Doxycycline)
Zinc can chelate with tetracyclines, reducing their absorption. Administer zinc at least 2-4 hours apart.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Zinc can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Administer zinc at least 2-4 hours apart.
Storage
Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and irritation of the mouth and throat. Chronic overdose can lead to copper deficiency anemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; discontinue zinc and monitor electrolyte levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zinc is essential during pregnancy and lactation. Nalzin is generally considered safe when taken at recommended daily allowances. High doses should be avoided unless specifically advised by a doctor. Consult your physician before use.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of zinc supplementation in reducing the severity and duration of acute diarrhea in children and in treating various forms of zinc deficiency.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum zinc levels (if deficiency is suspected or during prolonged therapy).
- Serum copper levels (if high-dose zinc is used long-term, to prevent copper deficiency).
- Complete blood count (CBC) to monitor for anemia.
Doctor Notes
- Crucial for pediatric diarrhea management, often prescribed with ORS.
- Advise patients on drug-food and drug-drug interactions, particularly with antibiotics and iron supplements.
- Monitor for signs of copper deficiency in patients on long-term high-dose zinc therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take Nalzin exactly as prescribed or directed by your healthcare provider.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a doctor.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking to avoid interactions.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
