Description
Overview of the medicine
Natcal-DX 600 mg tablet is a combination supplement containing elemental calcium and Vitamin D3. It is used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, promote bone health, and manage conditions like osteoporosis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet once or twice daily, preferably with meals, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor calcium levels. Dosage adjustment may be required.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally, preferably with a meal to enhance absorption, especially if taken for osteoporosis or deficiency. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, crucial for maintaining strong bones. Together, they ensure proper calcium metabolism and bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Calcium levels may begin to rise within hours; bone density changes occur over months.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces (unabsorbed) and urine. Vitamin D metabolites are excreted primarily in bile and feces, with a small amount in urine.
Half life
Vitamin D3 has a half-life of approximately 24 hours, but its active metabolites have longer half-lives. Calcium is tightly regulated by the body.
Absorption
Calcium carbonate is absorbed in the small intestine, requiring gastric acid for solubilization. Vitamin D3 is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine.
Metabolism
Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), its active form. Calcium is not metabolized in the traditional sense.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- •Severe hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Hypervitaminosis D
- •Known hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or Vitamin D3
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias in patients with hypercalcemia.
Corticosteroids
May decrease calcium absorption.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Phenytoin, Barbiturates
May increase the metabolism of Vitamin D.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics; separate administration by at least 2-3 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, thirst, polyuria, muscle weakness, bone pain, confusion, renal stone formation). Treatment involves discontinuation of the supplement, rehydration, and supportive care. In severe cases, intravenous fluids and medications to lower calcium levels may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when taken within recommended dosages. Consult your doctor to ensure appropriate dosing and monitoring.
