Mechanism of Action
Zinc is a vital trace element involved in numerous enzymatic reactions, immune function, protein synthesis, and wound healing. B-vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6) act as coenzymes in various metabolic pathways, essential for energy production, red blood cell formation, and nervous system function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Nutritional effects are gradual and build up over several days to weeks.
Excretion
B-vitamins are primarily excreted via the kidneys (urine). Zinc is primarily excreted via feces, with minor urinary excretion.
Half life
Half-life varies greatly among the individual B-vitamins (hours to days) and zinc (days to weeks, with regulated excretion).
Absorption
Zinc is absorbed primarily in the small intestine. B-vitamins are water-soluble and readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
B-vitamins are converted to their active coenzyme forms in the body. Zinc homeostasis is tightly regulated through absorption and excretion.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients or excipients.
- Severe renal impairment.
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) may reduce the efficacy of levodopa (used in Parkinson's disease).
Penicillamine
Zinc may decrease the absorption of penicillamine. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Tetracycline antibiotics
Zinc can reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline). Administer zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after tetracycline.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
Zinc can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (e.g., ciprofloxacin). Administer zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after fluoroquinolone.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare with this combination. Symptoms of excessive zinc intake may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and a metallic taste. Prolonged excessive zinc intake can lead to copper deficiency. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Consult a poison control center or physician immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased nutritional demands, but use only under the advice and supervision of a physician.
