Description
Overview of the medicine
Neogest contains Progesterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone. It is primarily used to supplement natural progesterone levels for various conditions, including menstrual disorders, infertility, and to support early pregnancy. It helps regulate the menstrual cycle, maintain the uterine lining, and facilitate implantation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 100-200 mg once or twice daily. Vaginal: 100-400 mg once or twice daily, depending on indication.
Elderly
Generally same as adults, with caution.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; no specific dose adjustment data, but liver function is more critical.
How to Take
Oral capsules should be swallowed whole with water, preferably at bedtime. Vaginal suppositories/capsules should be inserted deep into the vagina.
Mechanism of Action
Progesterone acts on the endometrium, converting it from a proliferative to a secretory state, preparing the uterus for implantation. It also suppresses gonadotropin secretion, preventing ovulation. It relaxes smooth muscle, including the uterus, and helps maintain pregnancy.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by route and indication; typically within hours.
Excretion
Primarily via urine as metabolites.
Half life
2-3 hours (oral), longer for sustained-release or vaginal forms.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, but undergoes significant first-pass metabolism. Vaginal administration bypasses first-pass metabolism, leading to higher uterine concentrations.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver to various metabolites, mainly pregnanediol.
