Description
Overview of the medicine
Neomega 1000 mg Capsule contains Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA), essential for maintaining overall health. It is primarily used to support cardiovascular health, reduce high triglyceride levels, and aid in brain and joint function.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For hypertriglyceridemia: 2-4 capsules daily, preferably with meals, or as directed by a physician. For general health support: 1-2 capsules daily with meals.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; however, cautious monitoring is advised due to potential comorbidities and polypharmacy.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with food to enhance absorption and reduce potential gastrointestinal discomfort. Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not chew, crush, or dissolve.
Mechanism of Action
Omega-3 fatty acids exert their effects through various mechanisms, including lowering plasma triglyceride levels by inhibiting very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) triglyceride synthesis in the liver and increasing fatty acid oxidation. They also possess anti-inflammatory and anti-arrhythmic properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Lipid-lowering effects may take several weeks (typically 4-6 weeks) to become fully apparent.
Excretion
Primarily eliminated through oxidative metabolism; minimal amounts are excreted unchanged in urine or feces.
Half life
The half-life of EPA and DHA varies, typically ranging from 24 to 72 hours, influenced by dietary intake and fatty acid metabolism.
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration, especially when taken with a high-fat meal. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 5-9 hours.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily in the liver by beta-oxidation, similar to dietary fatty acids, for energy production. Small amounts are incorporated into tissue lipids.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Omega-3 fatty acids, fish, or any component of the capsule.
- •Patients with acute pancreatitis (use with caution and under medical supervision).
Drug Interactions
Blood Pressure Lowering Medications
May have an additive effect on blood pressure reduction.
Anticoagulants and Antiplatelet Agents
Concomitant use may increase the risk of bleeding. Monitor bleeding time/INR regularly.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal distress such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or heartburn. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation should be considered only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
