Description
Overview of the medicine
A combination of essential B vitamins (B1, B6, B12) crucial for nerve health, energy metabolism, and red blood cell formation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, generally same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate impairment. Consult physician for severe renal disease.
How to Take
Oral. May be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Thiamine (B1) acts as a coenzyme in carbohydrate metabolism. Pyridoxine (B6) is involved in amino acid and neurotransmitter synthesis. Cyanocobalamin (B12) is vital for DNA synthesis, myelin formation, and red blood cell maturation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects on deficiency symptoms may be gradual, showing improvement over days to weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally via urine, excess amounts are rapidly eliminated.
Half life
Thiamine: 9-18 days (biological). Pyridoxine: 15-20 days. Cyanocobalamin: 6 days.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the jejunum for B1, B6 and ileum for B12 (with intrinsic factor).
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver; Thiamine to active thiamine pyrophosphate, Pyridoxine to pyridoxal phosphate. Cyanocobalamin is converted to active coenzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component
- Leber's disease (due to B12)
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine (B6) can reduce the efficacy of Levodopa, though this is less common with carbidopa/levodopa combinations.
Loop diuretics
May increase urinary excretion of thiamine.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light.
Overdose
High doses of Pyridoxine (B6) can cause peripheral neuropathy. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended doses. Consult a physician.
