Description
Overview of the medicine
Neuvit Plus 100 mg Tablet is a combination of essential B vitamins (Thiamine, Pyridoxine, and Cyanocobalamin) crucial for nerve health, metabolism, and red blood cell formation. It is used to treat and prevent deficiencies of these vitamins.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-3 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, no specific adjustment usually required unless significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; dose adjustment may be necessary for B6.
How to Take
To be taken orally, with or without food. Can be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Thiamine (B1) acts as a coenzyme in carbohydrate metabolism. Pyridoxine (B6) is essential for amino acid metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, and hemoglobin formation. Cyanocobalamin (B12) is vital for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and neurological function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptoms may improve within days to weeks depending on severity of deficiency.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine.
Half life
Thiamine: 9-18 days; Pyridoxine: 15-20 days; Cyanocobalamin: variable, generally long.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, especially Thiamine and Pyridoxine. Cyanocobalamin absorption requires intrinsic factor.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver to active forms.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients or excipients
- Leber's disease (due to Cyanocobalamin)
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
Pyridoxine (B6) can decrease the effectiveness of Levodopa in Parkinson's disease (this interaction is significant only with high doses of B6 without a DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor).
Phenobarbital, Phenytoin
Pyridoxine can decrease serum concentrations of these antiepileptic drugs.
Colchicine, Neomycin, Aminosalicylic acid
May impair absorption of Cyanocobalamin (B12).
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from light and moisture.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to water-soluble nature of vitamins. Excessive Pyridoxine (B6) can cause peripheral neuropathy. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased nutritional demands, but consult a doctor.
