Description
Overview of the medicine
Neuvital-100 mg tablet contains Pregabalin, an anticonvulsant and analgesic drug. It is primarily used to treat neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and as an adjunct therapy for partial onset seizures in adults. It works by affecting specific calcium channels in the central nervous system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose typically 75 mg twice daily or 50 mg three times daily, adjusted gradually based on response and tolerability, up to a maximum of 600 mg/day.
Elderly
Dosage should be reduced in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Initiate with lower doses.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be adjusted based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-60 mL/min, maximum 300 mg/day; for CrCl 15-30 mL/min, maximum 150 mg/day; for CrCl <15 mL/min, maximum 75 mg/day.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Pregabalin binds with high affinity to the alpha2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, thereby modulating the release of several excitatory neurotransmitters, including glutamate, norepinephrine, and substance P. This action reduces neuronal hyperexcitability and helps alleviate pain and seizure activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of analgesic action can be within 1 hour, but full therapeutic effects for neuropathic pain or seizures may take several days of consistent dosing.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 6.3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1.5 hours. Oral bioavailability is ≥90% and is not affected by food.
Metabolism
Negligibly metabolized in humans; approximately 98% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Pregabalin or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
CNS Depressants (e.g., opioids, benzodiazepines, alcohol)
May enhance CNS depressant effects such as dizziness, somnolence, and respiratory depression.
Thiazolidinedione antidiabetic agents (e.g., pioglitazone, rosiglitazone)
May exacerbate weight gain and peripheral edema when co-administered.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include somnolence, confusion, agitation, and restlessness. Management is primarily supportive and symptomatic, with gastric lavage or emesis if recent ingestion. Hemodialysis may be effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Pregabalin is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.

Clinical Trials
Pregabalin has undergone numerous clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and adjunctive treatment of partial seizures. Ongoing research explores its potential in other pain conditions and psychiatric disorders.
Lab Monitoring
- Monitor renal function (especially in elderly or renally impaired patients).
- Monitor for changes in mood or behavior, particularly suicidal thoughts.
Doctor Notes
- Initiate therapy with a low dose and titrate gradually to avoid adverse effects and optimize therapeutic response.
- Counsel patients on the risk of dizziness, somnolence, and the importance of not discontinuing abruptly.
- Assess renal function before initiating therapy and adjust dosage accordingly, especially in elderly patients.
- Monitor for signs of misuse or abuse, as Pregabalin has a potential for dependence.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not stop taking Neuvital abruptly; it should be tapered gradually over at least one week to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
- Report any unusual mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts to your doctor immediately.
- This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Driving Precautions
Neuvital can cause dizziness, somnolence, and blurred vision, which may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate complex machinery until they have gained sufficient experience with Neuvital to assess whether it adversely affects their ability.
