Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 10 years: 200 mg twice daily for 7-14 days. For certain infections, a single dose of 400 mg may be used.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment is present.

How to Take
Reconstitute the dry powder with boiled and cooled water as directed by the physician. Shake well before each use. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved 2-6 hours post-dose.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (approximately 50-60%) and also through bile.
Half life
Average plasma half-life is 3 to 4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized. A small percentage is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- History of anaphylactic reaction to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time and international normalized ratio (INR), leading to increased bleeding risk.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime administration.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Store reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C).
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by dialysis. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in human milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
