Description
Overview of the medicine
Nimenrix is a quadrivalent conjugate vaccine used to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y. It is approved for individuals from 6 weeks of age.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Single 0.5 mL dose. For infants (6 weeks to 6 months), a 2-dose primary series with a booster is recommended.
Elderly
Single 0.5 mL dose.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment recommended.
How to Take
Administered as an intramuscular injection, preferably in the deltoid region for adults and older children, and in the anterolateral aspect of the thigh for infants and young children.
Mechanism of Action
Induces active immunity against Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y by stimulating the production of bactericidal antibodies, thereby protecting against invasive meningococcal disease.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Protective antibody levels typically achieved within 10-14 days after vaccination.
Excretion
Not applicable; antigens are processed and immune memory established.
Half life
Not applicable in the conventional sense for vaccines; refers to duration of immune response.
Absorption
Rapid local absorption from the injection site.
Metabolism
Antigen processing by immune cells.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients or residual components (e.g., tetanus toxoid).
- Previous severe allergic reaction to a meningococcal vaccine.
Drug Interactions
Other Vaccines
Can be co-administered with other routine childhood vaccines, but separate injection sites should be used.
Immunosuppressants
Reduced immune response may occur in individuals receiving immunosuppressive therapy.
Storage
Store in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze. Store in the original package to protect from light.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with single-dose vaccine administration. If more than the recommended dose is administered, monitor for increased incidence or severity of adverse reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy should only be considered if the potential benefits outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. It is unknown whether Nimenrix is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administering to nursing mothers.
