Description
Overview of the medicine
Norfen-SR 100 mg Capsule is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by various conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. The 'SR' denotes sustained release, providing prolonged action.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
100 mg once daily, preferably in the evening, with food or milk.
Elderly
Initiate at the lowest effective dose; careful monitoring is required due to increased risk of adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary. Not recommended for severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally, whole, with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not chew, crush, or break the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Flurbiprofen, the active ingredient, inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by blocking the cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes. Prostaglandins are inflammatory mediators that contribute to pain, fever, and inflammation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Analgesic effect usually within 1-2 hours, anti-inflammatory effect takes longer (days to weeks).
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as metabolites (up to 95%) and a small amount in feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours for sustained-release formulations.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-4 hours for SR formulations.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily via CYP2C9, to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
