Description
Overview of the medicine
Norflu-05-mg-tablet contains Norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. While 5 mg is an unusually low dose for systemic treatment, it might be formulated for specific, localized, or highly sensitive conditions, or could be a misinterpretation of a standard strength.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically, for general bacterial infections, Norfloxacin is prescribed at 400 mg twice daily. A 5 mg dose is highly specific and would require explicit medical consultation for appropriate use, likely for very localized or prophylactic purposes.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be needed based on renal function; consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
Dosage should be reduced in patients with significant renal impairment; follow medical advice.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal or dairy products. Do not take with antacids containing magnesium or aluminum.
Mechanism of Action
Norfloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Approximately 30-40% of the administered dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours. Small amounts are excreted in feces.
Half life
3-4 hours
Absorption
Rapidly but incompletely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (30-40%). Peak plasma concentrations occur 1-2 hours after dosing.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver (less than 10% of dose).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Norfloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use
- Children under 18 years of age (due to cartilage damage risk)
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
Increased risk of CNS stimulation and convulsions.
Warfarin
Potentiation of anticoagulant effects.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of Theophylline.
Antacids (Mg/Al)
Reduced absorption of Norfloxacin.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, renal toxicity. Treatment is supportive; gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered. Maintain adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus/infant. Use only if benefits outweigh risks and under strict medical supervision.
