Description
Overview of the medicine
Norium-10-mg-tablet is an antidepressant belonging to the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) class. It is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and panic disorder by helping to restore the balance of serotonin in the brain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 10 mg once daily. May be increased to 20 mg once daily after one week, depending on response. Maximum recommended dose is 20 mg/day.
Elderly
Initial dose 5 mg once daily. Max dose typically 10 mg/day.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution advised in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily, preferably in the morning, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet; swallow whole.
Mechanism of Action
Norium selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) into presynaptic neurons, thereby increasing the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft and enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Initial antidepressant effects may be seen within 1-2 weeks, full therapeutic effect usually takes 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily in urine (approx. 60%) and feces (approx. 40%) as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 20-24 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, peak plasma concentrations typically achieved within 4-8 hours. Bioavailability is high and not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes, into active and inactive metabolites.
