Description
Overview of the medicine
Nosedex 120 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance the body produces during an allergic reaction.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: 120 mg or 180 mg orally once daily. For Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: 180 mg orally once daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is recommended in elderly patients with normal renal function. Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For adults and children 12 years and older with impaired renal function: 60 mg orally once daily for seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
How to Take
Take orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce the absorption of fexofenadine.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively binds to and inhibits the activity of histamine at H1 receptors, thereby preventing the symptoms associated with histamine release in allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antihistaminic effects generally begin within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (11-12%).
Half life
Elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes negligible hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
Can increase plasma levels of fexofenadine, but this is not associated with an increase in side effects.
Fruit Juices (Grapefruit, Orange, Apple)
Can reduce the oral bioavailability of fexofenadine. Avoid taking fexofenadine with these juices.
Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium
May decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. It is recommended to separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. In case of overdose, initiate general symptomatic and supportive measures. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
