Description
Overview of the medicine
An intravenous solution used for rapid rehydration and electrolyte replenishment in severe cholera or other conditions causing profuse diarrhea and dehydration.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Rapid intravenous infusion (e.g., 1-2 liters within 30-60 minutes), adjusted based on dehydration severity and patient response. Up to 75-100 ml/kg in the first few hours.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but with careful monitoring for fluid overload, especially in patients with cardiac or renal comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
Use with extreme caution. Dosage must be significantly reduced and closely monitored due to risk of electrolyte accumulation and fluid overload.
How to Take
Administered strictly by intravenous infusion by a trained healthcare professional. The rate of infusion is critical and depends on the degree of dehydration.
Mechanism of Action
Restores fluid volume and electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate) lost due to severe diarrhea, thereby correcting dehydration and acidosis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate
Excretion
Primarily renal, with excess water and electrolytes excreted by kidneys.
Half life
Dependent on hydration status and renal function
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed into the systemic circulation upon intravenous infusion.
Metabolism
Electrolytes are not metabolized but distributed and utilized. Lactate/acetate is metabolized to bicarbonate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to any component
- •Severe renal failure (anuria)
- •Congestive heart failure (relative contraindication due to fluid overload risk)
- •Hyperkalemia
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May alter electrolyte balance, requiring close monitoring.
Corticosteroids
May cause sodium and fluid retention, increasing risk of fluid overload.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Do not use if solution is cloudy or contains particles. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Fluid overload, pulmonary edema, electrolyte imbalances (hypernatremia, hyperkalemia, metabolic alkalosis). Management involves discontinuing infusion, administering diuretics, and correcting specific electrolyte abnormalities.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and essential for treating severe dehydration during pregnancy and lactation. Risks of dehydration outweigh potential fluid administration risks.
