Description
Overview of the medicine
Novacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-750 mg orally twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment for elderly patients based on age alone, but renal function should be monitored.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction required for patients with creatinine clearance less than 50 mL/min.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.

Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (50-70%) and to a lesser extent via feces (15-20%).

Partially metabolized in the liver to four active metabolites, but the parent drug accounts for the majority of the activity.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone
- History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use
- Concurrent use with Tizanidine
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
Increased risk of CNS stimulation and convulsions.
Warfarin
May enhance anticoagulant effect.
Tizanidine
Increased risk of hypotension and somnolence.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of Theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Antacids (aluminum, magnesium, calcium)
Reduce ciprofloxacin absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
No specific antidote. In case of acute overdose, gastric emptying by induced emesis or gastric lavage, followed by supportive care and hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy unless essential, as animal studies show adverse effects. Excreted in breast milk and may cause joint problems in infants; use with caution.
