Description
Overview of the medicine
Novadin 500 mg Capsule is a novel broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg orally every 6-8 hours, or as directed by physician. Duration of treatment varies depending on the infection.
Elderly
No dose adjustment typically required unless severe renal impairment. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, reduce dose to 500 mg every 12-24 hours. Consult physician.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Complete the full course of medication even if symptoms improve to prevent recurrence and resistance.
Mechanism of Action
Novadin inhibits the biosynthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to the interruption of peptidoglycan synthesis. This results in osmotic instability and lysis of the bacterial cell.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys (approximately 70% as unchanged drug) within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 2-3 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 80%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Novadin or other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins)
- •Severe renal failure without dose adjustment
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase Novadin plasma levels and prolong its half-life by reducing renal tubular secretion.
Aminoglycosides
Synergistic effect against some bacteria, but may increase risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and central nervous system excitation (convulsions at very high doses). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis may be effective in removing the drug from the bloodstream.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation and monitor infant for gastrointestinal disturbances.
