Description
Overview of the medicine
Novo ORS is an Oral Rehydration Salt formulation used for the prevention and treatment of dehydration caused by diarrhea or excessive fluid loss. It replenishes essential electrolytes and fluids lost from the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Mild to moderate dehydration: Drink as much as desired until dehydration is corrected, usually 2 to 4 liters over 24 hours. For severe dehydration, IV fluids are needed first.
Elderly
Similar to adults. Use with caution in those with pre-existing cardiac or renal conditions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and under medical supervision, as electrolyte imbalance (hyperkalemia, hypernatremia) may worsen.
How to Take
Dissolve the entire contents of a sachet (or appropriate amount from the 1025 gm pack) in the specified amount of clean drinking water (e.g., 500 ml or 1 liter) as directed on the label. Stir until completely dissolved. Drink slowly in small sips.
Mechanism of Action
ORS works by utilizing the glucose-sodium co-transport system in the small intestine. Glucose helps in the absorption of sodium and water, thus restoring fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effect observed within minutes to hours of consumption, depending on the degree of dehydration.
Excretion
Excess water and electrolytes are excreted primarily via urine, with some loss in stool.
Half life
Not typically measured for ORS components as they are physiological electrolytes and nutrients, continuously utilized and excreted.
Absorption
Rapid absorption of water, glucose, and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate) from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Glucose is metabolized for energy; electrolytes are utilized in physiological processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluids
- Persistent vomiting that prevents oral intake
- Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus
- Glucose malabsorption
- Renal failure with anuria
Drug Interactions
None significant
ORS primarily replaces fluids and electrolytes and does not have significant drug interactions with commonly used medications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Once prepared, the solution should be used within 12 hours (at room temperature) or 24 hours (if refrigerated).
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with proper preparation and administration. Ingestion of ORS powder without dissolving in water, or using insufficient water, can lead to hypernatremia. Symptoms may include extreme thirst, lethargy, and convulsions. Management involves re-evaluating electrolyte balance and providing appropriate fluid therapy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safe and beneficial during pregnancy and lactation for rehydration.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials and field studies have consistently demonstrated the efficacy and safety of WHO-recommended ORS formulations in preventing and treating dehydration, significantly reducing mortality rates from diarrheal diseases globally.
Lab Monitoring
- Not routinely required for mild to moderate dehydration. In severe cases or in patients with co-morbidities (e.g., renal impairment), monitoring of serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and renal function may be necessary.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of correct ORS preparation using the specified amount of clean water.
- Advise parents to continue feeding, especially breastfeeding, during ORS therapy for children with diarrhea.
- Monitor for signs of severe dehydration or worsening condition, which may require intravenous rehydration.
- Educate patients on proper hygiene to prevent recurrence of diarrheal diseases.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use clean drinking water for preparation.
- Carefully follow the instructions for the amount of water to be added.
- Do not add extra sugar or anything else to the ORS solution.
- Drink the solution slowly in small sips.
- Prepared solution should be consumed within 12 hours if kept at room temperature, or 24 hours if refrigerated.
- Continue normal feeding, especially breastfeeding, during ORS therapy.
Missed Dose Advice
ORS is taken as needed. If dehydration persists, continue drinking ORS. There is no concept of a 'missed dose' in the traditional sense.
Driving Precautions
Novo ORS has no known effects on the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Practice good hygiene to prevent diarrhea.
- Consume safe drinking water and food.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the toilet.
