Description
Overview of the medicine
NPH 10 mg Ear Drop is an otic solution containing Naphthyl-Polyhydroxy, indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate outer ear infections and associated inflammation and pain. It works by providing local antiseptic action and reducing discomfort in the ear canal.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 2-3 drops into the affected ear canal, 3 times daily for 7-10 days. Gently massage the tragus after instillation.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required; use as per adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For otic use only. Lie on your side with the affected ear facing upwards. Gently pull the earlobe up and back (for adults) or down and back (for children) to straighten the ear canal. Instill the prescribed number of drops. Remain in the same position for 1-2 minutes to allow the drops to penetrate. Do not touch the dropper tip to the ear or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Naphthyl-Polyhydroxy (NPH) exerts its action through a combination of antiseptic and mild analgesic properties. It disrupts bacterial cell membranes, inhibiting their growth, and provides localized relief from pain and irritation through its soothing effect on the inflamed ear canal lining.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local antiseptic and analgesic effects typically observed within 30 minutes.
Excretion
Not systemically excreted; expelled through ear canal discharge or localized degradation.
Half life
Not systemically relevant; local half-life depends on ear discharge and application frequency.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through the ear canal. Primarily acts topically.
Metabolism
Negligible systemic metabolism; local degradation likely minimal.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Naphthyl-Polyhydroxy or any components of the formulation
- •Perforated eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation)
- •Viral infections of the ear canal (e.g., herpes simplex)
Drug Interactions
Other Otic Preparations
Avoid concomitant use with other ear drops unless advised by a doctor, as it may alter absorption or efficacy.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical ear drops is unlikely. If excessive drops are instilled, gently wipe away any excess. In case of accidental oral ingestion, seek medical attention. Symptoms of local overdose may include increased irritation, itching, or redness in the ear.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult your doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation. While systemic absorption is minimal, caution is advised. Only use if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
