Description
Overview of the medicine
Nuprin 35 mg Cream is a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) containing Ibuprofen. It is used for localized pain and inflammation in conditions like sprains, strains, and muscular aches.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 2-4 times daily and rub gently until absorbed. Wash hands after use.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution due to potential increased skin sensitivity.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment for topical use as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to intact skin. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and open wounds. Do not cover with occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Ibuprofen works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever. By reducing prostaglandin production, Ibuprofen decreases inflammation and pain at the site of application.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine as metabolites if systemically absorbed.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 2-4 hours, but local effects may persist longer.
Absorption
Limited systemic absorption when applied topically, primarily acting locally. A small fraction may be absorbed into systemic circulation.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver (primarily via CYP2C9 and CYP2C8) to inactive metabolites if systemically absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- •History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- •Application to broken, damaged, or infected skin, or open wounds
Drug Interactions
Other NSAIDs (oral)
Increased risk of systemic side effects if significant systemic absorption occurs (unlikely with typical topical use).
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding if significant systemic absorption occurs (unlikely with typical topical use).
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is highly unlikely with topical application. If ingested or applied excessively over a large area, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy, as NSAIDs may cause fetal harm. Consult a doctor. Limited systemic absorption, but caution is advised during breastfeeding.
