How to Take

Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics

Rapid onset, typically within minutes to hours for clinical effect.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally and hepatically if absorbed systemically; locally, it is cleared from the ocular surface.
Half life
Systemic half-life is about 11-15 hours, but ocular tissue half-life is shorter, specific data for ocular drops are limited but local effect is fast.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. Therapeutic concentrations are achieved in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism after ocular administration.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other quinolones, or to any component of the formulation.

Other ophthalmic medications
If using more than one topical ophthalmic drug, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Flush the eye(s) with lukewarm water if an overdose occurs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Excretion in breast milk is unknown, use with caution.
