Description
Overview of the medicine
Ocutrex-05 Eye Drop contains Moxifloxacin 0.5%, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and other susceptible ocular bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days. Dosage duration may vary based on physician's assessment.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before and after use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill one drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye. Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bactericidal activity against a wide range of susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within a few days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed moxifloxacin is primarily excreted via renal and biliary routes, but systemic excretion is negligible with ophthalmic use.
Half life
The systemic half-life is approximately 12 hours, but local ocular concentrations are maintained for effective treatment.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical ophthalmic administration. Peak plasma concentrations are very low and often below the limit of quantification.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism is expected due to very low systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation
- Viral and fungal eye infections (as moxifloxacin is an antibacterial)
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic solutions
If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, allow at least 5 minutes between applications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Due to minimal systemic absorption, an overdose from topical ophthalmic administration is unlikely to lead to systemic toxicity. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic and supportive treatment may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman. Consult a doctor.
