Description
Overview of the medicine
Oliver 150 mg Tablet contains Ranitidine, an H2-receptor antagonist used to reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. It is primarily used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines, and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
150 mg twice daily or 300 mg once daily at bedtime for 4-8 weeks. For GERD, 150 mg twice daily for up to 12 weeks.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required for elderly patients with normal renal function. Use with caution in those with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduce dose to 150 mg once daily if creatinine clearance is less than 50 mL/min.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet; swallow it whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Ranitidine competitively inhibits the binding of histamine to H2 receptors on the gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing basal, nocturnal, and stimulated gastric acid secretion. It also decreases pepsin secretion and overall gastric volume.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily renal (unchanged drug and metabolites). A small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
2-3 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Bioavailability is approximately 50%.
Metabolism
Hepatic metabolism (N-oxidation, S-oxidation, desmethylation, and glucuronidation). First-pass metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ranitidine or any component of the formulation.
- Acute porphyria.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase or decrease prothrombin time; monitor INR.
Sucralfate
May reduce ranitidine absorption; administer sucralfate at least 2 hours after ranitidine.
Procainamide
May increase procainamide levels.
Ketoconazole/Itraconazole
Ranitidine reduces absorption due to increased gastric pH; administer ranitidine several hours after antifungals.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Limited experience with overdose. Symptoms may include transient adverse effects similar to those encountered in normal clinical experience. Management should be symptomatic and supportive, including removal of unabsorbed drug from the gastrointestinal tract and clinical monitoring.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Ranitidine crosses the placenta, but no evidence of harm in human studies. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.

Clinical Trials
Ranitidine has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for acid-related disorders. Post-marketing surveillance has identified issues with NDMA impurities in some formulations.
Lab Monitoring
- Liver function tests (LFTs) if long-term therapy or pre-existing liver disease.
- Renal function monitoring in elderly or those with renal impairment.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients about potential NDMA concerns with ranitidine products and discuss alternative treatments if appropriate. Ensure proper diagnosis before prescribing for prolonged use to rule out gastric malignancy. Monitor renal function in vulnerable patients.
