Description
Overview of the medicine
Omega-3 1000 mg capsules contain essential fatty acids, primarily Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), derived from fish oil. These fatty acids are crucial for various bodily functions, including cardiovascular health, brain function, and reducing inflammation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For general health: 1 capsule (1000 mg) once daily with food. For hypertriglyceridemia: 2-4 capsules (2000-4000 mg) daily in divided doses, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution is advised in those on anticoagulants. Follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required, but consult a physician for severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with food to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Swallow whole, do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Omega-3 fatty acids exert their effects through multiple mechanisms. They are incorporated into cell membranes, affecting their fluidity and receptor function. EPA and DHA serve as precursors for eicosanoids (prostaglandins, thromboxanes, leukotrienes) that are less inflammatory and thrombogenic than those derived from arachidonic acid. They also influence gene expression, reduce triglyceride synthesis in the liver, increase fatty acid oxidation, and improve endothelial function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Triglyceride-lowering effects may be observed within 2-4 weeks with consistent use.
Excretion
Excreted primarily through respiration (as CO2) and in urine as metabolites.
Half life
Variable; generally long, reflecting incorporation into tissues. Plasma half-life of EPA/DHA can be several days to weeks.
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration, primarily in the small intestine. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 5-9 hours for EPA and DHA.
Metabolism
Metabolized in the liver via beta-oxidation, similar to other fatty acids.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Omega-3 fatty acids or any component of the capsule
- •Acute pancreatitis
