Description
Overview of the medicine
Onida 400 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400 mg every 8 hours, or as directed by physician. Duration of treatment varies depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required unless severe renal impairment is present. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl < 30 mL/min, reduce dose or extend dosing interval.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a glass of water, preferably with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Complete the full course of medication even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Onidacillin inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though absorption may be affected by food.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to onidacillin, penicillins, or any component of the formulation.
- •History of severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Decreases the renal tubular secretion of onidacillin, leading to increased and prolonged plasma levels.
Methotrexate
May reduce renal clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing its toxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants. INR monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, neurological effects like seizures. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis may be useful in patients with renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk, but well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. Onidacillin is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
