Description
Overview of the medicine
Opdex eye drop contains Moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as bacterial conjunctivitis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily for 7 days. For severe cases, dosage may be increased to every two hours for the first two days, then three times daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pouch. Hold the dropper above the eye and release one drop. Close your eye gently. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in feces and urine if systemically absorbed. Ocular excretion is via tears and metabolic breakdown.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 12 hours after oral administration; however, ocular half-life is localized and shorter.
Absorption
Following topical ocular administration, Moxifloxacin is absorbed through the cornea and conjunctiva, reaching therapeutic concentrations in ocular tissues and fluids. Systemic absorption is minimal.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism. Primarily metabolized via glucuronidation and sulfation in the liver if systemically absorbed.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
No significant ocular drug interactions
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration due to minimal systemic absorption. However, caution is advised if the patient is taking systemic quinolones.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. If an overdose occurs, the eye can be flushed with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult your doctor.
