Opsomycetin 125 mg Suspension is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Infants
Consult pediatrician for specific dosage based on weight and age.
Children
10-15 mg/kg/day divided into 2-3 doses, for 7-10 days, or as directed by physician. Do not exceed 500 mg/day.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe impairment, consult pediatrician.
How to Take
Shake well before use. Administer orally using the provided measuring spoon or syringe. Can be taken with or without food, but food may reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Opsomycetin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing translocation of peptide chains. This leads to a bacteriostatic effect.

Mainly excreted in bile and feces, with a small portion via urine.

Absorption

Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase digoxin levels, monitor for toxicity.
Statins
Increased risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis with certain statins (e.g., simvastatin, lovastatin).
Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effect, requiring INR monitoring.
Theophylline
May increase theophylline levels, monitor for toxicity.
Ergot Alkaloids
Increased risk of vasoconstriction and ischemia (ergotism).
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe gastrointestinal upset, hearing loss, and liver dysfunction. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; hemodialysis is not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Opsomycetin is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult physician.
