Description
Overview of the medicine
Optacid 0.2% Eye Drop is an ophthalmic solution containing cromoglicic acid, used to relieve symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. It works by stabilizing mast cells to prevent the release of inflammatory mediators.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 drops in each eye 4-6 times daily at regular intervals. Treatment should be continued for as long as exposure to the allergen occurs, even if symptoms are no longer present.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye.
Mechanism of Action
Cromoglicic acid acts as a mast cell stabilizer. It inhibits the degranulation of mast cells that occurs after exposure to specific antigens, thereby preventing the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators (e.g., leukotrienes) that cause allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically begins within a few days, but maximal therapeutic effect may take 2-4 weeks of continuous use.
Excretion
The small amount of systemically absorbed drug is excreted unchanged in the urine and bile within 24 hours.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 5-10 minutes due to rapid elimination from the systemic circulation, but action in the eye is localized.
Absorption
Systemic absorption following ophthalmic administration is minimal. Less than 0.07% of the dose is absorbed systemically.
Metabolism
Cromoglicic acid is not metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cromoglicic acid or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Contact Lenses
Remove contact lenses before applying drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion of the eye drop is unlikely to cause severe systemic effects due to poor absorption. In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. It is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation, but consultation with a doctor is advised.
