Overview of the medicine
Opthamox-Plus 05-01 Eye Drop is a combination medication containing moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and dexamethasone, a potent corticosteroid. It is used to treat bacterial eye infections where an anti-inflammatory effect is also desired.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 drop in the affected eye(s) 2-4 times daily, or as directed by physician. Duration typically 7-10 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required.

How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pouch. Instill drop and close eye gently. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators.

Antibacterial effect typically seen within hours, anti-inflammatory effect within minutes to hours.

Moxifloxacin primarily excreted renally and fecally. Dexamethasone primarily excreted renally.

Systemic half-life for moxifloxacin is approximately 12-15 hours, for dexamethasone 3-4.5 hours, but ocular kinetics differ significantly.

Limited systemic absorption following topical ocular administration.
Metabolism
Moxifloxacin undergoes minor hepatic metabolism. Dexamethasone is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, dexamethasone, or any component of the formulation.
- •Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (e.g., herpes simplex keratitis), mycobacterial infections of the eye, fungal infections of ocular structures.
- •Uncomplicated bacterial conjunctivitis (steroids may mask infection).
Drug Interactions
Systemic corticosteroids
Concurrent use with systemic corticosteroids may increase the risk of side effects, though rare with topical ophthalmic use.
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If using multiple eye drops, administer at least 5 minutes apart.
