Description
Overview of the medicine
Betaxolol is a cardioselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent used to lower intraocular pressure in chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s). Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
It reduces aqueous humor production, thereby lowering intraocular pressure. As a beta1-selective blocker, it has less potential for pulmonary and cardiovascular side effects than nonselective beta-blockers.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
IOP reduction usually starts within 30 minutes, peak effect at 2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily renal.
Half life
Approximately 3-22 hours systemically.
Absorption
Systemic absorption occurs but is generally low. Peak plasma levels usually occur within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Sinus bradycardia
- •Second- or third-degree atrioventricular block
- •Overt cardiac failure
- •Cardiogenic shock
- •Hypersensitivity to betaxolol or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Oral beta-blockers
May potentiate the systemic effects (e.g., hypotension, bradycardia).
Calcium channel blockers
Increased risk of cardiac side effects.
Catecholamine-depleting drugs (e.g., reserpine)
May cause additive hypotensive and bradycardic effects.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C), protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely with ophthalmic use. If swallowed, symptoms may include bradycardia, hypotension, and bronchospasm. Symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
