Description
Overview of the medicine
Oral Saline-I 1025 gm powder is an oral rehydration salt formulation used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhea and other conditions involving excessive fluid loss. It replenishes essential electrolytes and fluids lost from the body. The 1025 gm pack is typically a bulk supply for preparing multiple liters of solution.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dissolve the appropriate amount from the 1025 gm bulk pack (as per manufacturer's instructions for the desired volume, typically 20.5g for 1 liter) into clean drinking water. Drink as much as desired to quench thirst and replace fluid losses, usually 200ml after each loose stool.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor closely for fluid overload if other conditions exist.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment, consult a doctor. Reduced intake may be necessary.
How to Take
Oral administration. Dissolve the appropriate amount of powder in the specified volume of clean drinking water as per manufacturer's instructions. Do not boil the solution after preparation. Consume slowly throughout the day. Discard any unused solution after 12-24 hours.
Mechanism of Action
ORS works by utilizing the sodium-glucose co-transport system in the small intestine. Glucose helps in the absorption of sodium and water, thus replenishing lost electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate) and fluids, correcting dehydration and acid-base imbalance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes for rehydration effects.
Excretion
Excess electrolytes are excreted via kidneys. Water is utilized or excreted.
Half life
Not typically applicable as it's an electrolyte replacement; components are utilized/excreted based on physiological needs.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract due to active transport facilitated by glucose.
Metabolism
Components are inorganic salts and glucose; glucose is metabolized for energy, salts are not metabolized but are involved in physiological processes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluids
- Anuria (absence of urine production)
- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
- Glucose malabsorption
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May alter electrolyte levels, monitor closely.
Certain medications for heart failure or kidney disease
Consult a doctor due to potential electrolyte imbalance.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Once prepared, store solution at room temperature or refrigerated.
Overdose
Overdose is rare when prepared correctly. Symptoms of excessive intake may include hypernatremia (high sodium), hyperkalemia (high potassium), or fluid overload. Management involves discontinuing ORS, correcting electrolyte imbalances, and supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safe for use during pregnancy and lactation. It is essential for managing dehydration in these populations.

YesClinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials since the 1960s have established ORS as a highly effective and life-saving intervention for diarrheal dehydration, leading to its global recommendation by WHO and UNICEF.
Lab Monitoring
- Electrolyte levels (sodium, potassium) in severe cases or in patients with pre-existing renal or cardiac conditions.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize correct preparation to avoid hypernatremia or insufficient rehydration.
- Advise parents/caregivers on recognizing signs of severe dehydration requiring hospital admission.
- Educate on continued feeding during diarrhea, especially breastfeeding.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use clean, boiled, and cooled drinking water for preparation.
- Do not add sugar or other substances to the ORS solution.
- Discard any unused solution after 12-24 hours.
- Consult a doctor if diarrhea persists for more than 2 days, or if there are signs of severe dehydration, high fever, or blood in stool.
Missed Dose Advice
ORS is administered 'as needed' to replenish fluids. There is no 'missed dose' in the traditional sense. Continue to take it as per symptoms of dehydration and fluid loss.
Driving Precautions
None specific. ORS does not impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Continue feeding (breastfeeding for infants) during diarrhea.
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent spread of infection.
- Avoid fatty, spicy, or high-fiber foods that can worsen diarrhea.
