Description
Overview of the medicine
Oranex 500 mg capsule is a vitamin C supplement used to prevent and treat vitamin C deficiency. It also acts as an antioxidant and plays a vital role in immune system support.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Vitamin C deficiency: 500 mg once daily or as directed by a physician. For general supplementation: 500 mg once daily.
Elderly
Same as adults, but consult a physician, especially if there are underlying health conditions.
Renal_impairment
Caution advised. High doses may increase the risk of oxalate kidney stones. Consult a physician for appropriate dosing.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage. It is crucial for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, and certain neurotransmitters. It also plays a key role in immune function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Biochemical effects typically begin within hours.
Excretion
Excreted renally as unchanged drug and metabolites. Excretion increases with higher doses.
Half life
Variable, depending on body stores (8-40 days for complete body pool turnover). For a single dose, elimination half-life is shorter.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially in smaller doses. Absorption decreases with increasing doses.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive compounds like oxalate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
- History of oxalate kidney stones or hyperoxaluria, especially with high doses
Drug Interactions
Aspirin
High doses of Vitamin C may increase urinary excretion of aspirin.
Warfarin
High doses of Vitamin C may theoretically reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, although clinical significance is debated.
Deferoxamine
Concurrent use may increase the risk of cardiac toxicity, especially in patients with iron overload.
Acidifying agents
May decrease the absorption of basic drugs.
Oral Contraceptives
May lower plasma Vitamin C levels.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), abdominal cramps, and flushing. Management is symptomatic and supportive. In severe cases of acute ingestion, gastric lavage may be considered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe at recommended daily allowances. However, high doses during pregnancy or lactation should be used with caution and only under a doctor's supervision.

Lab Monitoring
- No routine lab monitoring is generally required for typical supplementation doses. In cases of chronic high-dose use or specific medical conditions, monitoring for renal function and oxalate levels might be considered.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on appropriate dosing and potential risks of exceeding recommended intake.
- Consider renal function in patients prone to kidney stones before recommending high doses.
- Educate patients on the importance of a balanced diet alongside supplementation.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the capsule whole with water.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dose unless advised by a doctor.
- Store the medicine as directed.
