Description
Overview of the medicine
Oriham 10 mg Capsule contains Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid production. It is prescribed for conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Mild GERD/Dyspepsia: 10-20 mg once daily. For other conditions, dosage varies from 20-60 mg daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required in elderly patients, but caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment needed for renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, usually once daily, before a meal (preferably in the morning). Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that irreversibly blocks the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system, the 'proton pump', in the gastric parietal cells. This reduces gastric acid secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (approximately 80%) and feces (approximately 20%) as metabolites.
Half life
0.5-1 hour (plasma half-life), but the duration of action is much longer due to irreversible binding to the proton pump.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, bioavailability is about 30-40% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes.
