Description
Overview of the medicine
Orioplex-M Tablet is a combination of B-vitamins (Thiamine, Pyridoxine, Cyanocobalamin), Folic Acid, and Zinc, essential for proper functioning of the nervous system, red blood cell formation, and overall metabolic processes. It helps to meet nutritional deficiencies and supports nerve health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but consult physician for individual needs.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is usually required, but consult a physician in severe cases.
How to Take
Take orally with a glass of water, preferably after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
The B vitamins act as coenzymes in various metabolic pathways, essential for carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. Thiamine supports nerve function. Pyridoxine is crucial for neurotransmitter synthesis and red blood cell formation. Cyanocobalamin and Folic Acid are vital for DNA synthesis, cell division, and myelin sheath formation. Zinc plays a role in immune function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects may be observed within hours to days depending on the deficiency severity.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys in urine, with excess amounts excreted unchanged.
Half life
Variable depending on the specific vitamin: Thiamine (18-36 hours), Pyridoxine (15-20 days), Cyanocobalamin (storage in liver for years).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Thiamine and Pyridoxine are absorbed through active transport and passive diffusion. Cyanocobalamin absorption requires intrinsic factor.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the tablet.
- •Patients receiving Levodopa therapy (due to high dose Pyridoxine).
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce the absorption of zinc.
Levodopa
High doses of Pyridoxine can reduce the effectiveness of Levodopa in Parkinson's disease treatment.
Certain Antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines)
May affect the absorption or effectiveness of B-vitamins or zinc.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Generally, B vitamins and Zinc have low toxicity. However, excessive chronic intake of Pyridoxine (above 200 mg/day for prolonged periods) can lead to peripheral neuropathy. Management involves symptomatic treatment and discontinuation of the supplement. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered in acute overdose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe at recommended doses, but consult a physician before use during pregnancy or lactation to ensure appropriate supplementation.
