Description
Overview of the medicine
Osmosol-20 Injection is a sterile solution of Dextrose in water for intravenous administration. It provides calories and fluid, primarily used to treat hypoglycemia, dehydration, or as a component of total parenteral nutrition.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage is highly individualized, based on the patient's caloric and fluid requirements, age, weight, and clinical condition. Typically administered as a slow intravenous infusion. Infusion rate should not exceed 0.5 g/kg/hour.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but with careful monitoring of fluid and electrolyte balance due to potential renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor fluid, electrolyte, and glucose levels closely. Adjust infusion rate as necessary to avoid fluid overload or hyperglycemia.
How to Take
Administer by slow intravenous infusion using aseptic technique. Ensure proper catheter placement and observe for local reactions.
Mechanism of Action
Dextrose is a monosaccharide, a readily metabolizable source of energy. It provides glucose, which is the primary source of energy for cellular metabolism. When administered intravenously, it increases blood glucose levels and can be utilized for energy.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within minutes of administration)
Excretion
Excess glucose is excreted renally; metabolic byproducts (CO2, H2O) are excreted via lungs and kidneys.
Half life
Not directly applicable as it's rapidly metabolized. Glucose half-life in blood is very short, minutes.
Absorption
Administered intravenously, Dextrose is immediately and completely available in the systemic circulation.
Metabolism
Metabolized to carbon dioxide and water via glycolysis and the Krebs cycle, releasing energy.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Dextrose
- •Uncompensated diabetes mellitus
- •Hyperglycemia
- •Anuria or severe dehydration without electrolyte replacement
- •Intracranial or intraspinal hemorrhage
Drug Interactions
Insulin
Insulin is used to counteract the hyperglycemic effects of Dextrose. Close monitoring of blood glucose is required.
Corticosteroids
May increase blood glucose levels, potentially requiring adjustment of Dextrose infusion rate or insulin dosage.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hyperglycemia, glycosuria, osmotic diuresis, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances. Management involves discontinuing the infusion, administering insulin if severe hyperglycemia, and correcting fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when clinically indicated and blood glucose levels are carefully monitored. Consult a healthcare professional.
