Description
Overview of the medicine
Ostocal-Vita is a supplement containing Calcium and Vitamin D3, essential for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and overall body functions. Vitamin D3 aids in calcium absorption.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and dose adjustment may be necessary. Regular monitoring of serum calcium and phosphate levels is recommended.
How to Take
Orally, preferably with meals or as directed by a physician. The tablet can be swallowed whole or chewed.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is a vital mineral necessary for bone formation, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) helps regulate calcium and phosphate metabolism, promoting their absorption from the gut and deposition into bone.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects on bone health are gradual and long-term.
Excretion
Calcium: Primarily excreted in feces, with a smaller amount in urine. Vitamin D3: Excreted primarily in bile and feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Calcium: Varies significantly. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol): Approximately 24 hours (for the parent compound), active metabolite 25(OH)D3 has a half-life of 2-3 weeks.
Absorption
Calcium is absorbed primarily in the small intestine, with absorption enhanced by Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine, primarily in the jejunum, and transported via the lymphatic system.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), its active form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or vitamin D3
- •Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- •Hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis)
- •Hyperparathyroidism
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium can reduce absorption; separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce absorption; take at least 30 minutes after bisphosphonate.
Cardiac glycosides
May increase risk of arrhythmias.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Phenytoin & Barbiturates
May increase vitamin D metabolism, reducing its effect.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce absorption; take at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, polyuria, polydipsia, muscle weakness). Management involves discontinuation of the supplement, hydration, and medical intervention for severe cases.
