Description
Overview of the medicine
Ostocare-D 500 mg Tablet is a combination of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, primarily used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies and to support bone health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician. Best taken with meals.
Elderly
Same as adults, but monitor calcium levels more closely in frail elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and monitor calcium levels. Dosage adjustment may be required in severe renal impairment. Contraindicated in severe cases.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with a meal to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for bone formation, nerve transmission, and muscle function. Vitamin D3 facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and its incorporation into bone.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Gradual, with effects on bone density seen over weeks to months.
Excretion
Calcium is excreted primarily via feces and urine. Vitamin D3 metabolites are excreted mainly via bile and feces.
Half life
Calcium: Variable depending on calcium pool. Vitamin D3: Elimination half-life of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 is about 15 days.
Absorption
Calcium is absorbed primarily in the small intestine. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine, then hydroxylated in the liver and kidneys.
Metabolism
Calcium is mostly not metabolized. Vitamin D3 is metabolized in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substances or any excipients
- Hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood)
- Hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine)
- Severe renal impairment
- Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- Primary hyperparathyroidism
- Vitamin D intoxication
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium may reduce absorption. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can interfere with bisphosphonate absorption. Take bisphosphonates at least 30-60 minutes before calcium.
Corticosteroids
May reduce calcium absorption.
Cardiac glycosides
Hypercalcemia can increase the toxicity of cardiac glycosides.
Thiazide diuretics
May reduce calcium excretion and increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can decrease the absorption of these antibiotics. Take them at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, confusion, polyuria, polydipsia, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias. Treatment involves discontinuing the product, hydration, and medical management of hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when taken within recommended daily allowances, under medical advice. Excessive intake of Vitamin D can be harmful.

Clinical Trials
Extensive clinical data support the use of calcium and vitamin D for bone health and deficiency states. Specific trials for Ostocare-D as a brand are typically for bioequivalence.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels (especially in long-term therapy or renal impairment)
- Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (if deficiency is suspected)
- Renal function (e.g., serum creatinine, BUN) to assess kidney health
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on the importance of adherence, especially in osteoporosis prevention.
- Monitor serum calcium and vitamin D levels periodically, particularly in elderly patients and those with renal impairment.
- Educate patients about potential drug and food interactions.
- Emphasize the role of diet and exercise alongside supplementation.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the tablet with food to maximize absorption.
- Ensure adequate fluid intake throughout the day.
