Description
Overview of the medicine
Ostocare-DX 600 mg Tablet is a combination of Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. It helps maintain healthy bones, teeth, and supports overall bone density. Vitamin D3 aids in calcium absorption.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet once or twice daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution for renal function. Consultation with a doctor is advised.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required based on serum calcium and phosphate levels. Avoid in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral. Take with water, preferably after meals to maximize absorption and reduce gastric upset. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Carbonate provides elemental calcium which is essential for bone mineralization, nerve function, muscle contraction, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and its incorporation into the bone matrix. It also helps regulate phosphate balance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Calcium levels start to increase within hours; bone density changes are long-term (weeks to months).
Excretion
Calcium: Primarily fecal, some renal. Vitamin D3: Primarily biliary/fecal excretion.
Half life
Elemental Calcium: No true half-life, constantly exchanged. Vitamin D3: 15-30 days (for 25-hydroxyvitamin D metabolite).
Absorption
Calcium carbonate is absorbed primarily in the small intestine, requiring gastric acid for solubilization. Vitamin D3 is absorbed in the small intestine, primarily in the jejunum, and requires bile salts.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), the active form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Calcium Carbonate, Vitamin D3, or any component of the formulation
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- Severe renal impairment
- Renal calculi (kidney stones)
- Hypervitaminosis D
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Reduced absorption of bisphosphonates; separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Corticosteroids
May decrease calcium absorption; increased calcium and Vitamin D dose may be needed.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia; monitor calcium levels.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Reduced absorption of antibiotics; separate administration by at least 2-4 hours.
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Increased risk of arrhythmias if hypercalcemia occurs; monitor calcium and ECG.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias, renal failure, and coma. Treatment involves discontinuation of the supplement, hydration, and medical management of hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D requirements. However, consult a doctor before use and do not exceed recommended doses, as excessive vitamin D can be harmful.

Clinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials support the efficacy of calcium and vitamin D supplementation in preventing and treating osteoporosis, reducing fracture risk, and maintaining bone mineral density. Specific trials for 'Ostocare-DX' as a brand would be proprietary but general evidence for its components is vast.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels (especially in patients with renal impairment or on long-term therapy)
- Serum phosphate levels
- Renal function (creatinine, eGFR)
- Urinary calcium excretion (if hypercalciuria suspected)
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on appropriate diet and lifestyle modifications alongside supplementation.
- Caution patients about potential drug interactions, especially with antibiotics and bisphosphonates.
- Monitor serum calcium and renal function, particularly in elderly or renally impaired patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Take exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Maintain adequate fluid intake.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking.
- Report any unusual side effects promptly.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Driving Precautions
Unlikely to affect ability to drive or operate machinery, as it generally does not cause drowsiness or impaired cognition.
Lifestyle Advice
- Ensure a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D (e.g., dairy products, leafy greens, fortified foods).
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercises to promote bone health.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine intake, which can affect bone density.
- Avoid smoking, as it negatively impacts bone health.
