Description
Overview of the medicine
Ovanil 40 mg Syrup, containing Montelukast, is an oral medication primarily used for the prevention and long-term treatment of asthma and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking leukotrienes, substances in the body that cause inflammation, swelling, and narrowing of airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual dose for adults and adolescents 15 years and older for asthma or allergic rhinitis is 10 mg (an appropriate volume of Ovanil 40 mg Syrup as prescribed by a physician) once daily, preferably in the evening.
Pediatric
Children 6 to 14 years: 5 mg (an appropriate volume of Ovanil 40 mg Syrup) once daily in the evening. Children 2 to 5 years: 4 mg (an appropriate volume of Ovanil 40 mg Syrup) once daily in the evening. Children 6 months to 2 years: 4 mg (an appropriate volume of Ovanil 40 mg Syrup) once daily in the evening for asthma or perennial allergic rhinitis.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal insufficiency.
How to Take
Ovanil 40 mg Syrup is for oral administration. It should be taken once daily in the evening, with or without food. For asthma, the dose should be taken in the evening. For allergic rhinitis, the time of administration may be individualized to suit patient needs.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively blocks the cysteinyl leukotriene 1 (CysLT1) receptor. Leukotrienes are potent inflammatory mediators that are released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils, and bind to CysLT1 receptors, causing bronchoconstriction, mucous secretion, vascular permeability, and eosinophil recruitment. By blocking these receptors, Montelukast inhibits these actions, improving respiratory function and reducing allergic symptoms.

Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2A6).
